Statement by Kristen F. Soares, President of AICCU Regarding Federal Non-Renewal of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program

We are deeply disappointed by the lack of leadership shown by the federal administration in refusing to continue Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program protections.  We remain strongly committed in our support for all undocumented students, including those protected under this program.

We encourage Congress to act quickly, in a bipartisan fashion, to pass a DREAM Act to protect the 800,000 students who currently hold DACA status, allowing them to pursue the American Dream, finish their degrees, and work, free of fear.

The 78 private, nonprofit colleges and universities within AICCU remain committed to values of diversity, inclusion and non-discrimination. DACA students are tremendous contributors to campus communities – they enrich our campuses with their experiences and these students go on to contribute to the greater society as teachers, doctors and advocates.

Our institutions have been and will remain committed to doing everything possible to ensure that our students continue to have access to vital services and support necessary for them to graduate, contribute to our society and most importantly, to thrive.

We encourage students who hold DACA status to work with their institutions given the uncertainty surrounding the future of the DACA program.
