Eleven Students to Receive Ralph M. Parsons Scholarships
Scholarship Funded by Former Parsons Employee in Honor of Corporation’s Late Founder
PASADENA, CA (July 26, 2017) – Parsons is pleased to announce that 11 college students have been awarded Ralph M. Parsons Scholarships for the 2017–2018 school year. The scholarship funds—managed by the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU)—were bequeathed by an anonymous and highly-regarded former Parsons employee in honor of the corporation’s late founder, Ralph. M. Parsons.
“We are delighted to be involved in awarding these scholarships,” said Debra Fiori, Parsons Senior Vice President, Talent Management. “As a technology-driven engineering services firm, Parsons is committed to supporting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.”
Selection criteria set by the donor specifies that scholarship recipients must be STEM majors, enrolled in one of 16 private schools in California which offer STEM curriculums, have an above average academic record, and be engaged in their community or involved in extracurricular activities. The donor also stipulated that dependents of current Parsons employees should first be considered for the award, and then students from the 16 private engineering schools in California would be eligible for consideration.
This year, the scholarships are being awarded to one Parsons dependent attending Chapman University and 10 non-Parsons dependent students attending California Lutheran University, Chapman University, Claremont Graduate University, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Pomona College, the University of Redlands, the University of La Verne, the University of San Diego, and Westmont College. “AICCU is proud to partner with Parsons in awarding these generous scholarships to some of California’s best and brightest students who will contribute to the future workforce of California,” said Kristen Soares, President of AICCU. “These awards allow students to access and attend private independent institutions that provide a learning environment in which they can grow and thrive.”
Fiori added, “Ralph M. Parsons loved engineering and solving challenging problems, and we are happy that these deserving students who are pursuing STEM related-careers will benefit from this financial support. Like Mr. Parsons, we hope they will work to help solve the world’s future technical challenges.”
Parsons also has its own scholarship program. This undergraduate/graduate scholarship program was established in California in the 1960s and includes the dependents of Parsons’ full-time employees attending an accredited college or university.
The Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities represents 79 private nonprofit colleges and universities in California who collectively enroll 320,000 students and is the largest preparer of California’s advanced workforce. The core mission of AICCU institutions is to improve lives through higher education. AICCU institutions are committed to the public good and are incredibly diverse – ranging from large to small traditional liberal arts institutions, including nationally ranked research universities; colleges offering faith-based, performing and visual arts, and “non-traditional” programs of study; as well as professional schools that specialize in business, law, medicine, and more.
