Statement by AICCU Regarding the Governor’s May Revision to the Proposed Budget

Today, Governor Jerry Brown released the May Revision to his proposed 2017-18 budget. AICCU appreciates the recognition of the important role California’s private, nonprofit colleges and universities play in the higher education landscape, through the permanent repeal of the impending 11.3% cut to the maximum Cal Grant award for California’s neediest students. AICCU campuses are committed to increasing low-income student enrollments, strengthening our online education opportunities and developing transfer pathways.  AICCU institutions have been working on these very issues for some time but know that as a recognized sector of the state’s Master Plan we can strive for more.

California’s private nonprofit colleges and universities enroll over 27,000 Cal Grant students annually, reflecting the rich diversity of the state, and provide regional access to 69 undergraduate campuses throughout California. AICCU institutions serve over 188,000 undergraduate students. This is a time when we should all focus on improving higher education access and affordability, and the removal of this 11.3% cut is a step in the right direction.

We appreciate our ongoing partnership with the Administration and the Legislature, and look forward to working with them in an effort to help California’s students achieve their academic and career goals.
